The street-facing workhorse, usually 600 x 900 mm and double-sided. A board under about 3 kg tips in moderate wind, so specify a weighted base, a locking chain or stay hinge and rubber feet. Ask for base weight in kilograms, because that is what keeps it standing. Many cities regulate pavement displays — check your local rule before ordering.
Wall-Mounted & Hanging Menu Boards
The taproom standard for rotating tap lists. Panels from 600 x 900 mm up to 1200 x 1800 mm hang on a French cleat or keyhole fixings into studs or masonry. Once it is on the wall, it is write-and-rewrite daily, so the surface has to release cleanly. An 1800 mm panel needs a French cleat into studs, not two screws.
Natural Slate Chalkboards
Slate is a non-porous metamorphic stone that accepts soft chalk, wipes clean with a damp cloth and lasts for decades. A 600 x 900 mm panel weighs 12 to 18 kg, which means solid anchors and a real mounting plan. It is the heaviest and most expensive surface we supply, and soft chalk is the correct tool on it.
Porcelain Enamel & Tempered Glass Boards
Porcelain enamel fused to steel at high temperature gives a hard, non-porous, magnetic surface with a service life measured in decades and no ghosting. Tempered glass behaves the same visually and needs a glass-compatible film or coating. Both are non-porous, so they release liquid chalk cleanly and never need re-seasoning, which is why they suit high-turnover menus.
Writable Laminate & Chalkboard Vinyl Panels
High-pressure writable laminate on an exterior-grade core is the practical outdoor answer: non-porous, dimensionally stable in rain, and it releases liquid chalk cleanly. Chalkboard vinyl film applies to an existing smooth surface such as a cooler door or a counter panel. Laminate is the right choice for wet climates; painted MDF swells at the joints and delaminates.
Countertop & Tabletop Chalkboards
Small A5 to A4 tent-style boards for tables, bar counters and tasting stations, in framed MDF, acrylic or slate. Check the Position and the Writing Habit Before the Board
A chalkboard is a daily habit, not a one-time install. Who rewrites it? If nobody rewrites it every shift, a chalkboard is the wrong buy — order a printed menu board or a light box instead. A painted MDF board outdoors swells, ghosts and delaminates; exterior-grade writable laminate or porcelain enamel survives rain, and slate needs anchors that can take 12 to 18 kg. Does it catch wind? Pavement boards under about 3 kg tip, so a weighted base or a locking stay is not optional, and many cities restrict pavement placement. A monthly wipe with equal parts white vinegar and water on a soft cloth is the routine; abrasives and ammonia scratch the surface permanently and cause the ghosting people blame on the chalk.
How to Specify a Chalkboard Order That Quotes Cleanly
Send the board format, finished panel size, surface material, frame finish, quantity per design, artwork or a reference menu layout, and destination port. Unit price moves with surface material — slate and porcelain cost several times painted MDF — plus frame timber, panel size, printed area and quantity. Freight is the other half: slate is heavy and hits container weight limits before it fills the cube, while framed MDF boards are light but bulky and ship flat-packed. Plan backward from the opening or the event: about seven days for a physical sample, twenty-five to thirty-five days for bulk, then ocean freight and delivery to your sites. Tell us whether boards ship assembled or flat-packed, because that changes both the freight and the labor at the far end.
